Start by selecting a plan. Choose from the following options:
- Freedom Pass (unlimited* access to the dining halls plus 10 meal credits per week at the restaurants)
- Meals per Week (10, 12, 14 that can be used once per meal period either in the dining hall or at a restaurant using meal credits)
- Meals per Semester (130 and 180 that can be used in the dining hall consecutively and one per meal period at the restaurants using meal credits)
- Commuter/Apartment ($750 dining dollars with a five percent discount at the register)
- Athletic Plan (135 meals per semester that can be used in the dining hall consecutively and one per meal per period at the restaurants using meal credits)
* Access available every 30 minutes
All plans except for the Commuter/Apartment have a “meals” component that can be used in three ways:
- For dining hall meals (one swipe = all you can eat)
- For meals at campus restaurants and cafes through our meal credit program
- For dining hall take out, through our meal credit program
With most plans, you can use one meal per meal period, and we have 28 meal periods each week. Each restaurant has a different meal credit per meal period, starting at $5.25 for breakfast and as much as $7.50 for all other meal periods. Meal credit rates are posted at each location. Rates are subject to change for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Your Meals Component is supplemented by Dining Dollars. Dining Dollars are funds that can only be spent on food in on-campus dining locations. Think of these as “extra food money.” You can use them to make purchases in our convenience stores or vending machines; make up the difference if you go over the meal credit rate at restaurants/cafes; buy snacks and drinks; treat your parents, sibling or friend to a meal when they come to visit; or buy meals if you run out of meal-plan meals.
Once you have selected your Meals Component, you can choose to add 100, 200 or 300 Dining Dollars per semester.
Dining Dollars are optional for the Commuter and Athletic Meal plans. You will be enrolled in the same Dining Dollars selection for the spring semester unless we are notified otherwise. Dining Dollars roll over from year to year, and any remaining balance will be refunded when you graduate or withdraw from the university. Effective July 1, 2016, Dining Dollars will roll over from semester to semester during the student’s enrollment, but will not be refundable after the semester in which they were purchased ends.
The Commuter/Apartment Plan is a Dining Dollars-only plan that offers a five percent discount at the register. Students living off campus or in Wolf Village, Wolf Ridge, Greek Housing are eligible.

Yes, every spring we send a comprehensive meal plan guide to our new students living in the United States. These are mailed in late May. You can view a digital copy here.
Who’s required to have a meal plan?
All first-entry (i.e. first time entering college) students in University Housing are required to be on a meal plan during their first two semesters, regardless of academic standing. Once you’ve signed up for a plan, you will automatically be enrolled in the same plan for the spring semester unless you complete our online form or visit us in person at the Wolfpack One Card office in Talley Student Union between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays to change your selection.
Meals per Week … Meals per Semester … What’s the Difference?
If you choose a meals-per-week plan, this means you can use your meals during any of the 28 meal periods offered per week.
For example, if you get a 14-meal-per-week plan, you can use your plan to eat a meal at either our dining halls or our restaurants during 14 of the 28 meal periods.
Step up to the Freedom Pass plan, and you can enter the dining halls as often as every 30 minutes to grab a meal or snack, plus take advantage of 10 meal credits per week for restaurants, cafes and dining hall take out. It’s the perfect plan if you live near one of our dining halls.
If you choose a meals-per-semester plan, you can decide how many meals per week you will eat. For example, you can use 13 meals one week and 10 the next. It’s totally up to you.
To calculate the cost per meal for each plan, use 17 weeks as a guide. This is the average amount of time students are on campus each semester.
What are the meal periods?
We have 28 meal periods per week.
Breakfast (Sat-F): Opening – 10:30 a.m.
Brunch (Sat-Sun): 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Lunch (M-F): 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Dinner (Sat-F): 4:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Late Night (Sat-F): 9:00 p.m. – Closing
The Meals Per Week and Freedom Pass plans reset every Saturday morning. Each dining location has unique hours of operation, so consult our hours of operation page to determine what’s open during each meal period.

Can I buy Dining Dollars only?
Dining Dollars are a part of the meal plan and cannot be purchased separately unless you qualify for the Commuter/Apartment plan (ie. live in Wolf Ridge, Wolf Village, Greek Housing or in an off-campus location.) This plan consists of $750 Dining Dollars and offers a five percent discount at the register.
If I run out of Dining Dollars, can I get more?
Yes. Prior to the change deadline, you can override your existing plan with a higher number of Dining Dollars. For example, if you chose 100 and you now want 200, select “200,” and an additional 100 will be billed to your account with the cashier’s office.
The period for cancelling and making changes is June 15 – September 30 for the summer and fall semesters, and November 1 – January 30 for the spring semester. Click here during those periods for instructions.

How do I choose?
We’ve provided some tips here. But remember, you can try out your plan until September 30 for the fall and January 31 in the spring and make changes if necessary.
How is my dining plan billed?
We process meal plan applications weekly and send them to the cashier’s office beginning in June each year. It may take up to two weeks before the charges register with the cashier. That said, as long as we have your request, we can make your plan active within 48 hours, regardless of whether or not it has been billed and paid for.
If you change or cancel your meal plan, we will send a credit or additional debit to the cashier’s office for processing. Expect up to two weeks for the charges to be reflected at the cashier’s office and perhaps more if your request is logged during the winter holiday as the university is closed during that time.
It’s the beginning of the semester but I can only see my dining dollars balance from the previous semester. I know I have more. What do I do?
If you still have a Dining Dollars balance from the previous semester, your new balance will not show up at the cash register until your old balance is depleted. To check the status of your meal plan and dining dollars balance, visit go.ncsu.edu/manage-my-meal-plan. Here, you will be able to see your entire available balance.
When is it active?
Meal plans become active as soon as housing is open each semester. Please plan to have your meal plan request in our system at least 48 hours prior to arriving on campus.
