FAQ

Who is required to have a meal plan?

If you are a first-entry (i.e. first time entering college) student living in University Housing, you must be on a meal plan the first two semesters, regardless of academic standing. We will automatically enroll you in the Flex 500 plan, but you can change to the Flex 800 if you need more Dining Dollars.

Are there any exceptions to the meal plan requirement?

Under some particular circumstances, such as for disability or religious reasons, you may need to request an exemption to the meal plan requirement. To make such a request, visit our Meal Plan Accommodations page for details.

Where can I eat with my meal plan?

You can eat at any dining location on campus listed in the locations section of our website. Depending on how your plan works, you may have unlimited meals at the dining halls and a dining hall takeout or you may have block meals to use for the dining hall or takeout, but all plans have Dining Dollars, which can be used anywhere and come with a five percent discount at the cash register.

Locations – including hours of operation, directions, payment methods and menus/dietary information – can be found at dining.ncsu.edu/locations.

Where can I review the meal plan contract?

Yes, you can review the 2024-2025 meal plan contract here.

What if I don’t use all of my Dining Dollars in a semester?

Unspent Dining Dollars will roll forward from fall to spring semester. Dining Dollars are non-refundable and will expire on May 2, 2025, for the spring semester.

Do dining hall meals roll over?

No. If your plan has “meals per semester” or “block” options, use them accordingly. The only meal plan feature that rolls over is Dining Dollars.

Am I eligible for the Commuter Plan?

You are eligible if you are a returning or transfer student:

  • living in Wolf Village, Wolf Ridge, Western Manor, E.S. King, fraternity/sorority housing
  • living off campus

You are a first-year student:

  • living in a qualifying fraternity or sorority (owned by the university and serving 10 hot meals per week)
  • living off campus.

This plan consists of 900 Dining Dollars and offers a five percent discount at the register.

How will I be billed for my meal plan?

Meal plans are billed by semester through the cashier’s office. If you are student with a required meal plan, we will automatically enroll you, and your plan will be reflected on the cashier’s office. If you are not required to have a plan but register for one, the changes will not automatically show up on your bill. Please be patient, especially during the winter break when the university is closed.

NC Sales tax will be included on your cashier’s office bill as a separate line item.

When will my meal plan be active?

For the 2024-2025 academic year, meal plans will be active on August 12 – December 14 and January 2 – May 2.

If you are a returning student and want to have a plan active when you arrive on campus, sign up for a plan at least 48 hours before you arrive to ensure your plan is activated and ready for use.

There are a few times during the academic year when NC State Dining is closed, including Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break. As major university breaks approach, please consult our Hours of Operation for specific openings and closings.

I’m a returning or transfer student and want to choose a plan – where do I sign up?

You can register online for a meal plan during the enrollment period. Charges will be sent to the cashier’s office, but please allow up to two weeks for the charges to appear on your bill.
